Why Liverpool’s best season ever will be remembered as the most embarrassing season in the history of football.

Article: Why Liverpool’s best season ever will be remembered as the most embarrassing season in the history of football.

Liverpool FC have achieved one of the most unwanted Premier League titles in English football history, you may think this is a controversial statement, but when you explore the season in full, you will understand why it will always be remembered with a * after the year.

In this article we explore why the 2024/25 season for Liverpool was not as great as the fans will lead you to believe.

Klopp suddenly quits the club which results in no new signings.

Way before the season even started, Liverpool football club were rocked by the sudden announcement that manager Jurgen Klopp no longer had any interest in being the manager at the club and wanted to move on.

This shock announcement came after many seasons of underachieving in the Premier League, some had assumed Klopp had come to the conclusion that winning the league was beyond his management skills.

Whilst Liverpool had a talented squad, possibly the best in the league, Klopp was unable to surpass the managerial brilliance of arch rival, Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, or even that of underachieving Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta

After nine years of being Liverpool’s manager, Klopp decided it was time to give up and walk away, shocking most Liverpool fans.

Klopp’s departure started a ripple effect that would effectively result in the worst Premier League win in the history of English football.

Why did Klopp Quit Liverpool?

Klopp gave  a short brief pre-recorded interview saying it was time for him to move on, many have speculated the reasons why, which include:

  1. Burnout or Fatigue: Klopp's high-intensity coaching style, both mentally and physically demanding, could have led him to step away after a period of intense pressure. Managers in high-pressure clubs like Liverpool often feel the strain after several seasons of competing at the top level, especially if they are not able to win the league with arguably the best squad at the time.
  2. New Challenge: Klopp is someone who has often spoken about enjoying the challenge of rebuilding and leading a team to success. If he felt he had taken Liverpool as far as he could or if the project had become stale, he might have decided to pursue a new challenge elsewhere.
  3. Club's Direction: Liverpool underwent some major transitions in recent years, particularly with changes to the squad and ownership issues. If Klopp didn’t see eye to eye with the direction of the club or felt that the team’s future plans didn’t align with his own vision, that could have contributed to his departure.

Whilst this is only speculation, all three factors could of resulted in Klopp leaving Liverpool and seeking a new challenge in an easier environment for him.

New manager inherits the same squad and achieves more than Klopp.

After an extensive desperate search for a new manager willing to takeover at Liverpool, they eventually settled for the relatively unknown manager Arne Slot, who had limited success as a manager in the Dutch league.

Slot would start the season with the same squad and formation that Klopp had previously deployed, bringing little imagination and creativity to the club.

Despite copying Klopp style, Liverpool had a far better season, according to the statistics, but was this really down to the new manager, or just the fact that every other team in the league had a poor season, or was it because Liverpool played less games because of their early exit from almost all trophy competitions.

Lack of challenge from other teams explains the big points difference.

The 2024/25 Premier league season table demonstrated what an unbalanced season it was, with heavyweight teams like Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United deciding to focus on rebuilding their squads than trying to win the league, this created a vacuum for Liverpool.

For a long part of the season, league minnows Nottingham Forest were Liverpool’s only competition, something unheard of in any previous premier league season. Liverpool were only eventually able to pull away from Forest after their early exit from all cup competitions.

Disastrous European cup performance

Liverpool were clearly outshone by lower league teams Manchester United and Tottenham who both reached a major European final, despite these two teams finishing only just above the relegation zone in the Premier League, a reflection of how bad the league has been.

Liverpool’s poor season in Europe resulted in playing less games in the season allowing them to achieve better results in the league, have less injuries and had less player fatigue, which could be classed as an unfair advantage.

Knocked out of the worlds most famous cup competition by a relegated championship team

The FA Cup is the most important and prestigious cup competition in England and is respected throughout the world, but unfortunately this was another failure in Liverpool’s season.

In the very early stages of the FA Cup Liverpool faced Plymouth Argyle in an away fixture. At the time Argyle were right at the bottom of the Championship, technically nearly forty places below Liverpool.

Despite Liverpool fielding the strongest team possible, Argyle, who had only just replaced their own manager after a poor run of form, comprehensively outplayed Liverpool and won the game with ease.

This disastrous early exit from a major competition, ultimately overshadowed the Premier League win.

Star young player desperate to leave the club for better opportunities

One of the most controversial points of the season was the constant rumours that one of the star players at the club, Trent Alexander-Arnold, who had graduated from the clubs academy, was desperate to leave the club.

Despite winning the Premier League, Alexander-Arnold confirmed he wished to leave Liverpool and join a bigger and better club, this sent shockwaves around the country and raised questions on how the club treated and valued young players.

Disrespect shown to the best payers at the club with no contract offers

In addition to young star players wanting to leave the club, Liverpool’s two senior star players were initially not offered new contracts and looked set to leave the club, despite being widely regarded as the two players driving the club forward and getting results.

Eventually the two players, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, were handed new contracts after it emerged that the club may not have the funds to replace them with younger players.

Overshadows by local rivals stadium development

Anfield has been the home of Liverpool FC for over 100 years, and has always been a bragging right over local rivals Everton of how inferior their stadium, Goodison Park, compared to Anfield, but this all changed in 2025, adding to Liverpool fans woes.

Everton announced the development of an all new state of the art fifty two thousand seater stadium, imaginatively called ’Everton Stadium’ would be built during the year 2025.

This new stadium will be the most prestigious stadium in Liverpool, angering Liverpool fans at the lack of investment and development at Anfield.

Liverpool 2024/25 unwanted Premier league win conclusion

Whilst many Liverpool fans believe this is Liverpool’s best season in the Premier League, its clear that with the lack of competition from other teams and combined with the reduced number of games they played, this can hardly be classed as a great season.

Local rivals Everton have used the season to build a new stadium that is far more modern than the outdated Anfield stadium, something that must grate on Liverpool fans.

Other teams in the league, Manchester United and Tottenham, have reached a major European Cup Final, despite finishing almost at the bottom of the Premier League, showing how Liverpool have significantly under achieved in Europe, once again, and how the level of the Premier League was the lowest ever.

While the history books will record Liverpool FC as champions, It will be remembered as the worst season ever in Premier League History.
